National forensic League is a non partisan, non profit youth organization whose main purpose or goal is to motivate high school students in speech art. It does this by offering college scholarships to competition winners. Speech art includes facets like debate, oral interpretation of literature such as poems and short stories, public speaking among other aspects of speech art. The National Forensic League is a major player in secondary school debate competitions.

The NFL boasts of a membership base that is of over one million members in the whole world. Students who are enrolled in both private and public high schools can enroll as members on approval by their principal; they also need to pay all the associated fees.

Degrees are also awarded by these organization based on the number of points accrued by any particular student. Points accrued by students from a particular school are also factored in when deciding the number of student the school can field at the NFL tournaments

Some of the degrees awarded by the NFL include; Degree of merit which is secured on attaining twenty five points; Degree of honor which is awarded if a participant attains seventy five points; Degree of excellence which is awarded on attaining one hundred and fifty points; The degree of distinction which is awarded on attaining two hundred and fifty points; Special distinction degree awarded on attaining five hundred points and the outstanding distinction degree which is awarded on attaining one thousand points.

National Forensic League seeks to empower young people in High schools to be ethical individuals, effective communicators, critical thinkers and leaders in a democratic society. These values are encrypted in the Leagues mission statement. The league is keen on increasing public awareness on the value speech, debate and communication. This it does by organizing nation wide contests and competitions.

Students who win these contests are entitled to over 0,000 in college scholarship as prize money. This acts a as a motivation tool to participating pupils. The organization boast of both lifelong members and high school members, only secondary school students can participate in the competitions.

The first national speech tournament was held in nineteen thirty one, ever since that time the tournament has been going on continuously. Contestants in these competitions participate in original oratory, prose reading, poetry reading, story telling, value debate, public forums, and policy debate among other speech competitions.
